Welcome to
Pokot Women’s Health Rights (PWHR)
At Pokot Women’s Health Rights (PWHR), we are committed to transforming the lives of women and girls in West Pokot County, Kenya. For over six years, we have worked tirelessly at the grassroots level to address the unique challenges faced by marginalized communities. Our mission is to end harmful cultural practices, Empower Women and Girls, and provide access to vital social, economic, and health resources.
Through education, advocacy, and community-based programs, we aim to create a future where equality and dignity are upheld for all. By working directly with communities, we strive to build lasting change that ensures women and girls are protected, valued, and given the opportunity to reach their full potential. Over the past six years, our dedicated team has successfully led campaigns against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and child marriage, provided reproductive health services to thousands of women, supported hundreds of girls to stay in school, and empowered women with vocational skills and economic opportunities. Our experience has shown us that sustainable change begins with community ownership and culturally sensitive approaches, which remain at the heart of everything we do.
Improving Access to Clean Water We prioritize the development of sustainable water sources to ensure that communities have reliable access to clean and safe water—an essential foundation for health, dignity, and development.
Eradicating harmful cultural practices like Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and child marriage, which remain prevalent in many parts of West Pokot.
Promoting education for girls and women, recognizing that education is key to breaking cycles of poverty and dependence.
Empowering communities economically and socially to combat poverty and inequality through vocational training, income-generating activities, and awareness campaigns.
PWHR’s work is centered in West Pokot County, which is home to the Pokot community—a pastoralist society facing unique socio-economic, cultural, and environmental challenges. Many women and girls here lack access to quality health services, face deeply entrenched gender norms, and are vulnerable to practices that undermine their rights and opportunities. By working directly with local leaders, families, schools, and community health volunteers, PWHR creates culturally sensitive solutions to build a safer, healthier, and more equitable future for all.

Vision A community that embraces equality and human rights for all.
Mission
To end retrogressive cultural practices and empower girls and women to thrive in their communities by improving access to social and economic opportunities.
Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and obstetric fistula remain among the most devastating issues affecting women and girls in West Pokot. Despite FGM being illegal in Kenya, it persists in remote communities due to cultural traditions, peer pressure, and lack of awareness about its lifelong consequences. Fistula, often resulting from prolonged obstructed labor in the absence of skilled birth attendants, leaves women incontinent, isolated, and stigmatized.
